Bird Fest

Every year on the first weekend in October, birders, and nature enthusiasts from the United States and Canada converge in southern Alabama to partake in one of the Eastern Shore’s most exceptional birdwatching opportunities during the fall migration. Our region is a haven for avian diversity, with an impressive tally of over 370 bird species spotted along the Alabama coast. At the heart of this birdwatching extravaganza is the Alabama Coastal BirdFest, where expert guides lead attendees on boat and walking expeditions to the finest birding spots, including locations along the renowned Alabama Coastal Birding Trail.

During the four-day event, participants can venture into breathtaking locations, such as the Mobile Delta, Dauphin Island Bird Sanctuary, historic Fort Morgan, and the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge.

In addition to the thrilling excursions, BirdFest offers engaging workshops on diverse subjects, from hummingbirds to the fundamentals of birding, and even popular birding apps like eBird and Merlin Bird ID, there's something for everyone to learn and enjoy.

Families are also welcomed at the festival, with a free and family-friendly Bird and Conservation Expo held at the 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center on the Saturday of BirdFest. This Expo showcases local non-profits and environmental agencies, along with hands-on activities and short boat cruises led by junior birders!

Since its inception in 2004, BirdFest has not only created cherished memories for countless attendees but has also raised more than $100,000 for the noble cause of preserving and safeguarding vital coastal bird and wildlife habitats. Moreover, the event plays a crucial role in raising awareness about the exceptional biological diversity of the Alabama Gulf Coast.
