What is a Jubilee?
Consider yourself lucky to hear shouts from Mobile Bay, crying “Jubilee! Jubilee!”
A jubilee is a local term for a natural phenomenon that happens sporadically on the shores of Mobile Bay in Alabama. You’ll find everything from crab, shrimp and flounder to eels swarm into shallow coastal water. Locals can recant stories of running to the bay and fishing seafood out of the water by the bucketful.
Scientists say a drop in oxygen levels in the deeper water, forces the seafood to the shore.
The only other place in the world to document a similar phenomenon is in Japan.
It’s hard to predict when a jubilee is coming, but many say it’s more likely in the summer when there’s a calm over the Bay.
